Season 1, Episode 5

Love All Over Again

David Todd finishes off this first PASSAGES series by bringing it back to where it all started for him—his hometown of San Diego. David Todd and his friends challenge themselves to get the most out of the Southern California hotspot by exploring why San Diego is known for things such as surfing and jet skiing. Among the constant presence of the ocean’s waves they discover the persistent presence of God’s love in our lives.

What’s not to love about this episode? Beautiful weather, great surfing (minus the wipeouts, lol!), and the love of being home. That’s what the PASSAGES Crew experienced. Love is a major motivator in our natural lives, but what about in our spiritual lives?

In 2 Peter 1:3-4, love is the crowning jewel on a list of attributes to add to our faith. But this love is more than our human idea of it. The word for love here is agape, and is defined as a supernatural, heavenly brand of love that is ours in Jesus. It is the essence of serving God and others. The key, of course, is understanding that agape-love doesn’t originate with us. We can’t feel it, produce it, or experience it by ourselves. It flows from Jesus into our lives; then through us to others.

Through the love of Jesus, God gives us everything we need! Love motivates us to serve God, emulates the Lord Jesus, elevates the experience of life, and authenticates our discipleship to the world. No wonder love is the crowning attribute to Peter’s list of qualities to add to our faith! Love is the final supreme quality of Christlikeness.

Read Ephesians 3:18. Make this passage your personal prayer to God to know His love more.

Here are four everyday ways you can add love to your faith.

  1. Reconsider Your Definition of Love: Take time to study how Jesus loved others in the gospels, then make it your goal to love others as He did.
  2. Reorganize Your Priorities: On your calendar or “to-do” list write John 13:34-35. Ask yourself, “How can I love others like Jesus today?”
  3. Reimagine Your Relationships: See others as made in God’s image. Let that drive you to love others, even the most difficult people in your life.
  4. Remember that Love is Job #1: You are placed on earth to love Jesus and to love others as Jesus loved. The world is thirsty for love. Your family, friends, co-workers, your brothers and sisters. They all need someone to wash their feet, strengthen their courage, and give them a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name. Show them you are a disciple of Jesus. Show them His love!
