Gary's Story

Hear it!
asx file

Dennis: The first college football game he saw, he actually played in. Today on Passages, Gary, an NFL record-setting field goal kicker, remembers.

Gary: It was awfully exciting for me at first because I had never seen or heard of American football.

Dennis: This is Passages. I'm Dennis Benson. This South African athlete will re-shape the NFL records as a field goal kicker.

Gary: My story's a lot different than the average American football player who grew up playing little league, football games in junior high and senior high.

Dennis: Gary's had an interesting introduction to football.

Gary: My first college game I ever saw, I played in. So it was awfully exciting for me. And I probably have a little different perspective than the rest of my teammates. Because, still, I find it awfully exciting, and I realize that I'm very, very fortunate

Dennis: What is the source of his strong values?

Gary: Growing up in a real strong Christian home, my dad being a Baptist minister all my life. I was kind of made to go to church as a youngster growing up, but finally when I was old enough to realize and appreciate and understand things for myself. So I'm thankful for that upbringing.

Dennis: Gary's attitude is a challenge from your Presbyterian and United Methodist friends.
