Anchee's Story

Hear it!
asx file

Dennis: After the experience of being in a political prison camp, how does a fugitive from China find hope? Today on Passages Anchee answers this question.

Anchee: There's nothing we cannot endured. That makes why China is growing so fast. And they've already lost their youth to communism and they want to have a better life.

Dennis: This is Passages, the audio journal where people offer, in their own words, their stories of hope. I'm Dennis Benson and today Anchee, a noted author from China shares her awe of American freedom.

Anchee: In China, I was put through these hardships in the labor camp which twenty-million city youth have gone through. And these labor camp experiences really formed us. I mean when I came to America, I felt like its OK, working three jobs; paying my college. But I felt I am studying, I am given the right to study. It's my happiness. So, we learn to take nothing for granted. Because when I was at the farm, I had my back injured. Laying on the earth, and having all these storms pouring on me. The only thing I prayed to the God is, "God, please give me my back and I would heal my injury--I'm willing to be a peasant for the rest of my life." I really thought that way. I remember I just crawled through the rice paddy, and all these girls who've gone through.

Dennis: The story of Anchee's courage is a gift from your Presbyterian and United Methodist friends.
